Fourth round of the language workshop. This time: A 19-year-old from the Buenos Aires metropolitan area takes the stage at Latin America’s largest festival—something like the continent’s Eurovision—with a tribute to Víctor Jara, Mercedes Sosa, and Violeta Parra. He sings trap and Argentine folk music and brings along a murga group from Uruguay whose carnival music carries the rhythm of the candombe: music that African slaves brought to the Río de la Plata in the 18th century. Months later, the same artist appears on NPR’s Tiny Desk, the most renowned concert format on U.S. public radio—and his performance becomes one of the most-watched episodes in the series.
