Music For Black Pigeons ("Music!" film series)

Jazz is probably the most relaxed way to express yourself artistically. And the most global. This is what the second film in the "Music!" film series of Filmclub Casablanca shows and that's what it wants to express.
Documentary / DK 2022 / Director: Jørgen Leth and Andreas Koefoed / 92 min. / OV + German subtitles

"Music for Black Pigeons" by filmmakers Jørgen Leth and Andreas Koefoed is a documentary that explores the lives and workings of some of the world's most renowned and prolific jazz musicians, including Jakob Bro, Bill Frisell, Lee Konitz, Paul Motian and Midori Takada.

The film crew has followed Danish composer Jakob Bro throughout North America, Europe and Japan over the past 14 years, witnessing his musical encounters with musicians of different generations and nationalities. "Music for Black Pigeons" finds its inspiration not only in the individual and diverse methods of the musicians documented, but also in the unique energy and camaraderie that occurs when musicians work together.

Leth and Koefoed had the privilege of filming some of the final performances of several musicians who sadly passed away during the course of filming, and pay sincere respect to these pioneers who have left the world. By capturing the intimate process between the eclectic performers, "Music for Black Pigeons" helps lay the foundation for future generations.

When the film screened at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, it was hailed by jazz affinados as the ultimate music film ever. Perhaps that's an exaggeration, but it's certainly one of the second most beautiful after "Jazz on a Summer's Day" (Newport 1958).
