Punching the World (STRAZEcinema)

Freely adapted from the novel of the same name by Lukas Rietzschel, Constanze Klaue tells the story of a family that is torn apart by circumstances and itself, losing its sons to the neo-Nazi scene.
Drama / DE 2025 / Director: Constanze Klaue / 110 min. / Original version / FSK12

The brothers Philipp (12) and Tobias (9) grow up in rural eastern Germany in the early 2000s. The family builds a house. Uwe, a gaunt man who helps on the construction site, suddenly dies. His downfall seems to reflect the fate of an entire region: too much alcohol, no work, and a GDR past that cannot be shaken off. Moving into the unfinished house marks the beginning of the family's decline. The father becomes unemployed, the mother tries to keep things going. In the middle of it all are Tobi and Philipp, left to their own devices. In contrast to the confines of home and family, the landscape seems boundless. Endless forests, yellow rapeseed fields, and the turquoise-blue water of the quarries, into which one can jump to escape boredom for a moment. In a life where there are otherwise few rays of hope and role models, nature becomes a place of refuge. In the end, all that remains are the older boys, who promise adventure but mean violence and xenophobia. Philipp joins them. For the first time, he feels a sense of purpose and belonging, even if it means crossing boundaries. When a refugee home is to be built nearby, the situation escalates.

The movie poster for “Mit der Faust in die Welt schlagen” shows two young men lying close together, with the upper man towering over the lower one. The composition is diagonal, creating a sense of restlessness and intensity. The color palette is muted, with a dominant yellow for the movie title that contrasts sharply with the rest of the image and draws attention. The title, “Mit der Faust in die Welt schlagen,” is written in a rough, brush-like font that suggests aggression and rebellion. The young men's faces are not fully visible, which allows for a certain anonymity and universal applicability of the emotions depicted. Their postures suggest a complex relationship that could involve both closeness and a certain tension. The poster conveys an atmosphere of youth, turmoil, and the search for identity. It hints at a story that deals with the challenges of growing up, social conflicts, and the struggle to find a place in the world. The dark tones and intense portrayal of the characters suggest a drama that deals with serious issues. The mention of “Based on the novel by Lukas Rietzschel” suggests a literary source that may further underscore the depth and complexity of the characters and their circumstances.
