A unique event takes place once a year in Haifa (Israel): A beauty contest for Holocaust survivor women. A beauty contest that celebrates life. Documentary / DE 2019-22 / Director: Radek Wegrzyn / 90 min. / OV with German subtitles
A film screening as part of the events in Greifswald for the nationwide day of remembrance on January 27 - the day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism.
12 women aged 77-95 stroll along a catwalk. They are wearing their most beautiful dresses. Jewelry and makeup adorn aged faces and fragile bodies. It is the strangest beauty contest in the world. Because the women have one thing in common: they are the last generation of Holocaust survivors.
These women escaped the worst hell of the 20th century. They were robbed of their childhood, their bodies, their femininity and their freedom. Nevertheless, they became mothers, grandmothers, some great-grandmothers. Now they face the inevitable: the age-related deterioration of their own bodies.
With "Miss Holocaust Survivor", Radek Wegrzyn ("The School on the Magic Mountain", "Summer in the Country", "Violinissimo") is responsible for a moving cinema documentary that approaches the topic of the Holocaust from a completely different angle. Wegrzyn accompanies various women who survived the Holocaust and take part in a unique beauty contest. A competition exclusively for Holocaust survivors that is both respected and controversial. And an event in which the focus is not on appearance, but above all on the personalities and experiences they tell about. The filmmaker brings their moving stories to the big screen, combining beauty, courage and strength in this extraordinary gathering that celebrates life.
