Lesbian Space Princess (STRAZEcinema)

A space princess is thrust out of her sheltered life and into a galactic quest to save her bounty hunter ex-girlfriend from the Straight White Maliens.
Animated science fiction comedy / AU 2025 / Director: Leela Varghese, Emma Hough Hobbs / 86 min. / Original version with German subtitles / PG-16

The introverted Princess Saira, daughter of the flamboyant lesbian Queens of planet Clitopolis, is devastated when her girlfriend, the bounty hunter Kiki, suddenly breaks up with her for being too needy. When Kiki is kidnapped by the Straight White Maliens – forgotten incels of the future – Saira must leave the comforts of gay space to deliver the requested ransom: her Royal Labrys, the most powerful weapon known to lesbian kind. The only problem is… Saira doesn’t have it!
With just a 24-hour window to get the weapon and save Kiki, Saira finds herself on an inter-gay-lactic journey of self-discovery which includes encounters with a problematic spaceship and a new-found friendship with gay-pop runaway Willow. A riotous, candy-coloured animated comedy adventure through the vastness of queer space.

Hilarious, colorful, euphoric, unapologetically queer: The first feature film by Australian directing duo Leela Varghese and Emma Hough Hobbs is a thrilling intergalactic journey of self-discovery with a big heart and a desire for mayhem, somewhere between a wild sci-fi musical comedy and a healing coming-of-age adventure. It won the Teddy Award at the 2025 Berlinale and second place in the Panorama Audience Award. Great fun for the whole family, no question! However, it has been rated 16+ by the FSK censors – for reasons as mysterious as infinite space.

STRAZE and IZfG (Interdisciplinary Center for Gender Studies) are collaborating for the first time for this film screening. The IZfG team will frame the film with a short introduction that places "Lesbian Space Princess" in the tradition of queer cinema representation. The focus will be on the “mysterious reasons” for the FSK16 rating, but also on cinematic pioneers such as "Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same" (2012).
Anyone who is interested is welcome to continue the discussion after the film in the café, where they can talk with each other and with the IZfG team about lesbians in space and queerness in cinema.

Doors open: 7.30 pm
Start: 8 pm
Admission: 3/5€

The film will be shown in the original English version with German subtitles.

A further education event organized by STRAZEkultur at Kultur- und Initiativenhaus Greifswald e. V. in cooperation with the Interdisciplinary Center for Women's and Gender Studies (IZfG) at the University of Greifswald.

Monday is movie night at STRAZE.

This movie poster for Lesbian Space Princess features a vibrant, cartoon-like style that immediately catches the eye. At the center are three young women who are clearly the main characters of the film. Their different hairstyles and clothes, combined with their expressive faces, hint at different personalities and roles. The color palette is bold and contrasting, with a dominant dark blue representing space, broken up by bright shades of pink, yellow, and turquoise. This creates a futuristic and exciting atmosphere. The characters are posed dynamically: one is holding a futuristic weapon, another is playing guitar, and the third appears to have her arms protectively wrapped around one of the others. These poses suggest action, music, and possibly emotional bonds between the characters. A small, stylized spaceship on the left side of the image reinforces the space theme and hints at adventure and travel. The lettering is large and eye-catching, with the film title “Lesbian Space Princess” highlighted in a striking pink font. The additional line “A FILM FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY” positions the film as a family-friendly entertainment experience that may address themes such as friendship, courage, and self-discovery, packaged in a science fiction setting. The awards and festival nominations listed in the upper left corner of the poster (Teddy Award, Berlinale Panorama, Adelaide Film Festival) indicate that the film has been well received and recognized within the film industry, raising expectations for the film's quality and message. Overall, the poster conveys a message of fun, adventure, and inclusivity, which is underscored by the film's unique visual style and thematic focus. -image description copied from filmposter-archiv.de
