Kontinental '25 (STRAZEcinema)

In a mixture of drama and comedy, the film incisively dissects topics such as the housing shortage, the post-socialist economy, nationalism, and the power of language to maintain social status.
Dramedy / RO 2025 / Director: Radu Jude / 109 min. / Original version with German subtitles

In Cluj, the capital of Transylvania, Orsolya, who belongs to the Hungarian minority, works as a bailiff. When she has to carry out an eviction in a house that is to make way for a luxury hotel, a tragedy unfolds before her eyes. Tormented by feelings of guilt, she abruptly cancels her long-planned vacation with her family and seeks out conversations with various people. But neither her husband, her best friend, a surprise encounter with one of her former students, nor her confession to an Orthodox priest can resolve Orsolya's moral dilemma...

Radu Jude's new tragicomedy, shot on an iPhone, is an homage to Roberto Rossellini's “Europe '51” about the contradictions and hypocrisies of modern Europe. On the one hand, Cluj is the scene of an upswing in tourism and the construction industry, but on the other hand, “Kontinental '25” reveals how poverty, homelessness, and nationalism are normalized there. Is Orsolya, the film's endearing heroine, the only one who has retained her humanity?

Radu Jude, born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1977, won the Golden Bear in 2021 with “Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn” and was a member of the International Jury at the Berlinale in 2023.

This film poster for Radu Jude's “Kontinental '25” is characterized by its striking imagery. The foreground is dominated by the portrait of a young woman whose gaze wanders thoughtfully and slightly anxiously into the distance. Her facial expression and the soft, painterly brushstrokes lend her a vulnerability that contrasts with the architectural austerity of the building in the background. The building, a magnificent, historic structure with many windows and balconies, may symbolize an institution, a society, or a bygone era. The red color in the upper part of the poster, reminiscent of a sky or a flag, could represent drama, danger, or a political message. The awards highlighted in the upper left corner—Silver Bear and 75th Competition—indicate the film's critical acclaim. The film title KONTENTAL '25 in bright green stands out and forms a strong visual anchor. Overall, the poster conveys an atmosphere of thoughtfulness, possibly about the absurdities and transgressions of modern life, as suggested by the German text in the upper section. The combination of the intimate portrait and the monumental architecture creates a tension that makes one curious about the story the film tells. -image description copied from filmposter-archiv.de
