70-year-old Mahin has been living alone in Tehran since the death of her husband and the departure of her daughter to Europe. A convivial afternoon tea with friends provides the impetus to leave her lonely and monotonous everyday life behind. Mahin harbors the desire to rekindle her love life. In her search for a new partner, she spontaneously opens her heart to Faramarz, a cab driver of the same age. The chance encounter turns into a surprising and unforgettable night.
"My Favourite Cake" is the third joint work by the successful Iranian directing duo Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha ("Ballad of the White Cow"). The film, which celebrated its acclaimed world premiere in competition at the Berlinale 2024, tells a playful and emotional story of hope and love with a delicate sense of humor. The tragicomedy paints an authentic picture of the everyday lives of women in Iran and their opportunities for subtle emancipation against the patriarchal authorities. What begins as a romantic encounter between two lonely strangers develops into a touching ode to life, women and freedom.
