Forgotten migrants

Migration in the mirror of multiple crisis and emancipation
Film(Mali/D 2021) and discussion with Diory Traoré from Afrique-Europe-Interact in Bamako/Mali

A migration activist who works in a quarry, a fisherman who fights climate change, a chicken farmer without chickens and a fabric trader without customers - this documentary portrays four personalities in Mali who are trying to overcome their existential problems. In search of a better life, they oscillate between internal migration and the dream of Europe. State mismanagement and the influence of restrictive EU border policies also play an important role.

Since the film was made in 2019/20, the political situation in the region has changed fundamentally. In the Sahel states of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, the military has overthrown the corrupt, predominantly façade-democratic regimes in recent years and is still supported by the majority of the population today. Despite all the ambivalences and country-specific differences, the current developments are an expression of an emancipation effort to finally overcome (neo-)colonial dominance and dependency relationships with the Western world, particularly France. At the same time, all three countries are confronted with a brutal war waged by jihadist terrorist networks.

Diory Traoré lives in Bamako/Mali.
She is active in the Malian section of Afrique-Europe-Interact and accompanied the filming of the movie at the time. She can report first-hand on the current state of developments in Mali - and on how society is struggling to make fundamental changes, including with regard to the right to migration.
