Silent film with live music accompaniment by Long Shutter Noise Reduction (HRO). Feature film / DE 1920 / Director: Robert Wiene / 72 min. / no language, texts in German / PG12
The silent film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” from 1920 is about a tyrannical character who uses a somnambulist as his blind tool. When the two arrive in a small town, a series of murders begins. In an attempt to solve them, the boundary between reality and delusion dissolves.
Robert Wiene gave the film a unique aesthetic that perfectly matched the plot. He uncompromisingly had all the sets, props, costumes, and even the font of the intertitles designed to match. This first thriller in world history still captivates audiences today with its oppressive atmosphere.
The duo LONG SHUTTER NOISE REDUCTION plays live alongside silent films, using modern technical means to create soundscapes that match the images. It combines styles such as drone, ambient, and doom with improvised and experimental music. The film takes on the role of a conductor during the performances.
