Dark Waters (STRAZEcinema + Talk)

This feature film tells the true story of attorney Rob Bilott, who single-handedly took on one of the world’s largest chemical companies and brought the so-called Teflon scandal to light.

Cincinnati, 1998. Successful corporate lawyer Rob Bilott finds himself in a moral dilemma when two farmers bring to his attention strange occurrences in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where a large number of cows have died under mysterious circumstances. The farmers suspect the chemical company DuPont—for which Bilott himself works as a lawyer—is responsible. Despite this conflict of interest, the conscientious lawyer is determined to get to the bottom of the case without reservation and quickly uncovers incriminating evidence pointing to an environmental scandal of immense proportions. Supported by his boss Tom Terp and his wife Sarah, Bilott selflessly throws himself into a protracted battle that could cost him his reputation, his health, his personal happiness, and perhaps even his life. .

Following the film, we invite you to a roughly 15-minute lecture (in German) and subsequent discussion with Prof. Dr. med. Nils-Olaf Hübner, Director and Chief Hospital Hygienist of the Medical Board at Greifswald University Hospital. Together, we would like to explore environmental toxins, their health consequences, and our social responsibility in dealing with pollutants.

As the “Medicine and Human Rights” student group, we advocate for a socially just and inclusive healthcare system so that as many people as possible can have good access to adequate medical care. As part of this, we organize, for example, lectures on racism in medicine, workshops on abortion and its integration into medical education, field trips, and film screenings.
