A documentary about US lawyer Marty Rosenbluth, who provides legal assistance to people in Georgia who are awaiting clarification of their residence status in prison. The film feels like the place itself—idyllic and lost. Empowering and inspiring. Documentary / DE 2024 / Directors: Ole Elfenkaemper & Kathrin Seward / 83 min. / Original version with subtitles / PG12
The rural Stewart County lies quietly and sleepily in southwestern Georgia. Hidden in the forest is one of the largest deportation prisons in the United States. Up to 2,000 people wait here for their trials, most of them without legal representation. A fair asylum process is difficult to obtain in many areas of the US because the prisons are usually located “an hour from the middle of nowhere.” This is also the case in Stewart County: within a 200-kilometer radius, there are no private asylum and immigration lawyers except Marty Rosenbluth, who has dedicated his life to defending human rights. Together with his assistant Alondra, Marty fights with gentleness and passionate dedication for people in immigration detention and against the arbitrariness of the courts. In observational scenes, we experience various cases and accompany the family of one of his clients on their legal and emotional rollercoaster ride until the day of the court hearing.A magnificent story about an outstanding immigration lawyer, his assistant, and their clients emerges, offering an authentic and quiet observation of the brutal deportation machinery of today's USA.
