Three afternoons, three venues, three different films

Celebrating International Women's Day on March 8, STRAZEkultur, in collaboration with the Neighborhood Assistance Association WGG e. V. and the Child Protection Association KV Western Pomerania Greifswald at the Schwalbe - Schönwalder Begegnungszentrum, will be screening films featuring strong female characters, feminist themes, and the fight for equality on three afternoons at 3 pm.

The screening series starts on March 4, 2026, at 3 pm at the premises of the Neighborhood Assistance Association WGG e. V. at Makarenkostraße 18 (Schönwalde II) with a film that shows what happens when every woman simply takes a day off ...

The Day Iceland Stood Still
Documentary / IS, US 2024 / Directors: Pamela Hogan & Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir / 70 min. / Original version with German subtitles

When 90 percent of Icelandic women went on strike and left their homes one autumn morning in 1975, refusing to work, cook, or look after their children, they brought their country to a standstill and catapulted Iceland to the “best place in the world to be a woman.”
Told for the first time by the women themselves and featuring playful animations, “The Day Iceland Stood Still” is subversive and unexpectedly funny. “We loved our chauvinistic pigs,” recalls one of the activists, “we just wanted to change them a little!”
(Original languages: English and Icelandic, subtitles: German)

On March 8, 2026, at 3 pm, the series will continue at the Schwabe – Schönwalder Begegnungszentrum (Schönwalde Community Center) at Maxim-Gorki-Straße 1 (Schönwalde II). In Die Unbeugsamen II . Guten Morgen, ihr Schönen ("The Unbreakable II . Good morning, beautiful people"), Torsten Körner portrays women who knew how to assert themselves in the GDR between the dogmas of “heroine of labor” and “housewife”: sly, powerful, and incredibly awesome.

Die Unbeugsamen II . Guten Morgen, ihr Schönen ("The Unbroken II . Good Morning, Beautiful People")
Documentary / DE 2024 / Director: Torsten Körner / 104 min. / Original version (no subtitles)

Fifteen women from the former GDR have their say in this lively group portrait. They recall a country of state-imposed equality, in which patriarchal structures nevertheless prevailed in all the different areas of society from which they came. Among those who recount their struggle for equal opportunities are the former mayor of Potsdam, Brunhilde Hanke; the farmer and “heroine of labor,” Solveig Leo; the DEFA assistant director, Barbara Mädler; the historian and publicist, Annette Leo; the painter, Doris Ziegler; behavioral biologist Marina Grasse, writer Katja Lange-Müller, punk rocker Gabriele Stötzer, peace activist Ulrike Poppe, actress Katrin Sass, drummer Tina Powileit, metallurgist Katrin Seyfarth, comic book artist Anke Feuchtenberger, dental assistant Kerstin Bienert, and Amrei Bauer, daughter of painter Annemirl Bauer. Accompanied by exclusive archive material, the women recall the double burden their mothers and grandmothers had to bear, as well as their own dreams and concerns.

Finally, on March 16, 2026, at 3 pm, we will be showing the documentary Stolz & Eigensinn ("Pride & Obstinacy") at Kultur- und Initiativenhaus Greifswald e. V. – STRAZE in der Stralsunder Straße 10 (Steinbecker Vorstadt)

Stolz & Eigensinn ("Pride & Obstinacy")
Documentary / DE 2025 / Director: Gerd Kroske / 113 min. / Original version (no subtitles) / Audio description: “GretaApp”

Germany immediately after reunification. The second major wave of layoffs has reached the east. Women from the former large industrial companies of the GDR talk with surprising matter-of-factness about themselves and the personal independence they gained through their work. Self-confident and emancipated, they share their astonishment that suddenly only men are supposed to do their jobs. They also talk about the utopias of the past that no longer exist today. In addition, we see footage of their everyday working lives in long-gone industrial buildings and lignite mines. The interviews have been preserved on old U-matic tapes from the archives of the former Leipzig pirate radio station KANAL X.

After all film screenings, we invite you to stay for a discussion.
Snacks, coffee, and cake will be provided. Admission is free on all afternoons.
